For Five consecutive years, the great stallion Darco led the World Breeding Federation of Sport Horse ranking as the best jumping horse progenitor. He currently has the most offspring that competed at Grand Prix level. It is a record which no single sire has ever achieved since the ranking was first developed in 1995. Moreover, Darco is one of the few sires of the present ranking who previously appeared in the original rankings from 1995. In other words, Darco has been at the top for more than fifteen years. Reasons enough to assume, at this time, that Darco is the best jumping horse progenitor ever in show jumping.

Nowadays, Darco is very popular with the breeders however it wasn’t always that way from the start. In 1984, after his first breeding season, 41 foals were registered with the BWP. A year later, only 19 and one year after that the number fell to 13. Meanwhile, Darco became the champion of the young horses twice, but he still wasnt a favorite of most of the breeders. In 1989, BWP registered 40 of his foals. When the first of Darcos offspring began to do well in the competitions for young horses, and Ludo Philippaerts won 2 heats of the World Cup when Darco was only 9-years old, the tide turned.

After Darcos sport career ended, he quickly developed a reputation as a supplier of sport horses and gained world wide influence in the breeding of sport horses. At the time of Darcos inspection, a new trend was being started within the BWP. BWP was the first registry to introduce free jumping as a mandatory part of the stallion approval process, a trend that would be copied by all the other major registries. Darcos performance in this discipline was strong and that made the difference as he was approved based mainly on his performance in the free jumping phase. The contribution of jumping talent to the approval process received more and more weight value. Darco is a fixed entry on the list of stallions with the most offspring in top sport. There are close to 2,500 of his offspring currently registered with the BWP and other studbooks.

Darco passed away in 2006 at the age of 26 but thanks to this stallion, the BWP could advance itself at the international level and win the hearts of many breeders all over the world. In 2007, Darco received an award from the United States Equestrian Federation and at the 2008 stallion inspection, Darco was paid an extra tribute with a parade of six of his approved sons and the pinning of the golden BWP insignia to his breeder by Flemish Minister-President, Kris Peeters.

His worldwide fame and international success with Ludo Philippaerts is today mirrored by his two- time Olympic Gold medal winning daughter Sapphire and her rider McLain Ward. His offspring continue to dominate the show jumping scene especially in the U.S. as you see his name in the pedigree of horses competing in virtually every major jumping competition. His offspring have proven to be very rideable by both professional and amateur riders. The BWP/NAD now has eleven approved stallions with Darco in their pedigree.
